A surgical dental microscope is a specialized tool that has enabled dentists to diagnose dental conditions with greater accuracy. It is a light weight, easy to carry and highly portable instrument. The word Surgical literally means "of the surgical kind". These dental tools are essential for dental surgery as they help in detecting various dental diseases like periodontitis, gingivitis, gum disease etc. which if left untreated will lead to severe complications. Earlier, it was very difficult to study the tissue of teeth. It was also very expensive and did not permit any experimentation on the dental structures. The fluoroscope used in medical laboratories is a special type of optical instrument which enables the medical practitioner to view all the objects and tissues through the optical lenses.

Fluorescent light and high intensity lights are used for creating images on the microscope slide. The fluorescent light is used for creating images of the dental specimen which is under the fluorescein-based microscope. A high intensity light is used for creating images of the tissue structure. Under the medical microscope, it is a very important role that the dental hygienist has to play. He is required to scrutinize minute areas of the teeth and dental cavities using the surgical, dental microscope.

The surgical instrument used by the dental expert is a little different from the ordinary ones. It is either a tube or a syringe attached to some other sort of device. There are several kinds of microscope tubes obtainable depending upon the requirements of the dental laboratory.

Most of the people confuse between the clinical and the surgical, dental microscopes. While the latter is generally used for performing dental procedures, the former is used for investigating dental abnormalities. For example, cavities, growths and other defects in the teeth and gums are detected using this medical tool. However, most of the people are unaware of the difference between the two and end up with the wrong type of equipment when they require them for their dental treatments.
